How to Throw a Glamorous Dinner Party in a Tiny Space

If you have ever longed to host a dinner party for your friends but have hesitated for lack of space, hesitate no more! There is no reason you can’t entertain guests in your small apartment. We promise. Here are some tips on how to throw a glamorous dinner party in a tiny space:

Don’t hold back

Seriously, you got this. Don’t let your tiny space trick you into believing that you can’t entertain in your home! With the right amount of preparation and creativity, you can fit anywhere from three guests to fifteen in your little apartment. It might sound overwhelming, and a little crazy, but if you want to cook for your friends and loved ones, we don’t think the amount of space you have should ever hold you back.

Clean!

No matter what kind of space you’re working with, cleaning before entertaining guests is an obvious must—but it’s especially important for a small space. Dust, dirt, and especially clutter are going to be far more noticeable if your guests are crammed into a tiny space. Take the time to put everything away properly, dust and vacuum, and make sure your bathroom is utterly spotless. Hide toiletries away in a closet, and remove any needless trinkets or décor for the evening to open up your space.

Rearrange furniture

Chances are, if you’re living in a small one or two-bedroom apartment, you don’t have a particularly grand dining area. But have no fear! All you have to do is rearrange some furniture. One blogger actually switched her living and dining areas completely, which is genius. When you’re throwing a dinner party, you’re going to want the majority of your space to be dedicated to the dining area, whereas the lounging area probably won’t suffer from being a bit smaller. Don’t hesitate to remove unnecessary furniture either. It can be stored temporarily in your bedroom or office and no one will know the difference!

Choose the right lighting

Lighting is key for any good gathering. Florescent, overhead lights can feel a bit cold and uncomfortable, not to mention they’ll highlight any dust or stains you may have missed while cleaning. Any space, no matter the size, looks warm and inviting with twinkling tea candles and some string lights.

Cook a simple meal

One of the worst things you can do for dinner party in a small space is overreach with your chosen course. This might seem like the perfect time to show off your finely developed culinary skills, and it still can be, but attempting to cook a meal involving twenty different ingredients for a crowd in your tiny walk-through kitchen is only going to create a huge mess. Try to stick to simple recipes to cut down on dish-washing and prep time.

Prep!

Preparing for a dinner party in a small space is not something you want to put off until the last minute. Sit down and plan out seating arrangements, music, and snacks. Set the dinner table ahead of time, wash and cut any vegetables you may be using, and make sure you have every ingredient you need for your meal so you don’t have to run out in the middle of the party. Consider things like traffic flow and ventilation—they don’t sound important now, but small spaces warm up quickly, and they also can feel overcrowded if everyone is hanging around in the same area, say, over a snack table (this can be remedied by spreading food out).
