It’s important to love your home. It’s where you unwind at the end of a long day, where you have the freedom to be entirely yourself, and where you likely find the most comfort. So, don’t put off decorating! Make your space yours.

Here are five fun decorating tips for you to try:

1. Gallery Wall

Your walls are the most obvious place to start decorating. Sure, you could hang a photograph here and a piece of artwork there, but what can you do that you haven’t already done before? A gallery wall is a fun way to display multiple pieces of artwork and/or photos, without making your wall look cluttered—just make sure everything is framed! Picture frames can be expensive, so if you’re pinched for cash, stop by a thrift store; they almost always have some interesting ones to choose from. Pick out different shapes and sizes and see how you can place them together. You’ll be making art out of your art! Here’s a guide to help you get started.

2. Accent Wall

Once you have your gallery wall finished, pick another wall in your home that needs some attention. An accent wall is a great option for anyone who doesn’t want to commit to painting their whole home, and perfect for anyone renting (you’ll only have one wall to paint over when you move out!) Create a pattern or keep it solid with a bold color that pops. Stripes are pretty popular for accent walls right now, and they will certainly bring the party. Choose dramatically different colors like black and white to ensure perfect contrast. Check out this how-to on painting stripes.

3. High Curtains

Want to make your apartment look big and expensive? Purchase longer curtains than the length of your windows and hang them high, about 5-7 inches above the window casing. This will create the illusion of high ceilings, and will make your room look like a ballroom. Opt for sheer curtains for an even more sophisticated look that will work in any room.

4. Area Rug

The easiest way to spice up a room is to add an area rug. Make a statement with a bold pattern in an understated room, or tone things down with a solid. Area rugs can define a space by framing your furniture, and add a level of grandeur and sophistication to your home. Choosing one can be picky though. The size needs to be just right, or things can get a little weird. But don’t fret! There are guides out there that will help you measure out the perfect rug for your space. Here’s an awesome one to try.

5. Backsplash

Don’t forget about your kitchen! This can be one of the toughest rooms to decorate, especially if you’re renting. Turns out this might be easier to change than you may have thought. Did you know there’s such a thing as adhesive wood walling? Just peel and stick to your plain white backsplash for an instant upgrade!
